Are these vibe code templates really free?

Yes. Free kits download at no cost once you sign in with your email. The license on each listing says what you may do with it; most free kits use permissive licenses such as MIT, which let you use, change and build a business on the code.

Can I use a free template commercially?

Usually, but check the license on the listing. MIT, Apache-2.0, BSD and ISC allow commercial use with credit. GPL and AGPL allow it but require you to share your changes under the same license.

Why would someone give a template away?

To get noticed, to be hired, or because they built it for fun. Every listing has an "Ask the maker to build yours" button, which is how many free kits turn into paid work.

What is the difference between free and open source?

Free means no price. Open source means the license lets anyone read, change and share the code. Most free kits here are also open source, but not all; see the open source page for kits with an OSI-approved license.
